Is double glazing worth it in Adelaide?

Yes, in most Adelaide homes — but the payback story depends on the existing windows, the orientation, and how much heating and cooling you actually run. Homes with older single-glazed aluminium windows usually have the most to gain. The payback in pure energy terms varies widely from home to home, but the comfort and noise benefits start day one.

Double glazing is one of the most-discussed and least-understood window upgrades in Adelaide. Half the conversation is “it’s a no-brainer”, the other half is “you’ll never make the money back”. The real answer depends on your existing windows, your house orientation, your west-facing exposure, and how aggressively you run heating and cooling.

This guide walks through what drives the answer — for an Adelaide home, in Adelaide’s climate.

What double glazing actually does

A standard double-glazed unit (DGU) is two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity, typically 12mm or 16mm wide. The cavity is the insulation — it dramatically reduces conducted heat transfer through the glass. Add a low-emissivity (low-e) coating and the unit also reflects radiated heat, cutting summer solar gain on west-facing windows. Add an argon fill in the cavity and conducted-heat performance improves further.

As a rough guide, single-glazed aluminium windows sit at the poor end of the U-value scale (around 6 W/m²K or more), standard double-glazed aluminium does noticeably better, and well-specified uPVC or thermally-broken double glazing with low-e and argon does better again (around 2 W/m²K or lower). Lower is better — it means less heat loss and gain. Check the published figures for the specific product quoted.

Adelaide’s climate and double glazing

Adelaide has hot dry summers and cool damp winters — both extremes drive heating and cooling load through windows. If the air-conditioning is already running flat-out before the upgrade, Adelaide aircon installation specialists can factor the new glazing into the cooling-load calculation, which may mean a smaller unit is enough. The west-facing window problem is particularly Adelaide: late-afternoon summer sun on west-facing single-glazed windows can heat a room considerably, and low-e double glazing reduces that solar gain.

Conversely, on a cold July morning, single-glazed windows lose heat quickly, so rooms take longer to warm up and cool down faster once the heater is off.

Energy savings — what to expect

How much you save depends on the existing windows, the size and orientation of the glazing, shading, insulation elsewhere in the home, and how you heat and cool. Homes with large areas of single-glazed aluminium, especially facing west, usually have the most to gain; homes that are already partly double-glazed, well shaded and well insulated have less. For a figure specific to your home, an energy assessment or the published U-value and SHGC figures for the products quoted are the best guide.

Comfort gains — day one

The energy story is the financial story. The day-one story is comfort:

  • West-facing rooms stay noticeably cooler on summer afternoons, particularly with low-e glass.
  • The cold feeling near the glass in winter is reduced.
  • Condensation on the inside of windows on winter mornings is usually reduced.
  • Traffic noise is often reduced, especially with acoustic-laminated glass in the unit.

These benefits compound over years and don’t show in any spreadsheet.

Payback periods

Pure energy payback varies widely, so treat any single payback figure with caution. It is generally shorter where the existing windows are poor, the glazed area is large and heating and cooling run often, and longer where the home is already well shaded and insulated. Many homeowners weigh the comfort and noise improvements as heavily as the energy savings.

When films do the job instead

For heritage homes where double-glazing replacement isn’t viable, or for west-facing rooms where the headline problem is summer solar gain, Adelaide architectural window film (applied to the existing single-glazed glass) can recover much of the summer comfort gain at a lower cost. Sister business Vista Fox handles solar and UV film for residential and commercial projects.

When it isn’t worth it

Some scenarios where the maths is harder:

  • You’re planning to sell soon. The capital invested may not fully recover in resale.
  • You have heritage overlay restrictions. Heritage timber sash retrofits can be done but cost more than aluminium double-glazing.
  • Your house is already well-insulated and shaded. Less window-driven loss to fix.
  • You don’t run heating or cooling. No energy bill to reduce.

If none of those apply, double glazing is usually worth a serious look.

What to spec — Adelaide-specific recommendations

  • A low U-value (check the published figure for the product) for noticeable comfort gain
  • Low-e coating on west-facing windows to control summer solar gain
  • Argon fill in the cavity if budget allows — a modest performance lift for a modest extra cost
  • uPVC frames for the best thermal performance per dollar (aluminium frames lose much of the benefit you’ve added through better glazing)
  • WERS-rated systems (or equivalent published performance data) so you have documented performance numbers

Cost ranges

See our window cost guide for full ranges. Quick summary: retrofit double-glazing $1,800–$4,000 per opening; full double-glazed window replacement $1,500–$8,500 per opening fitted (premium triple-glazed uPVC up to around $11,000).

Frequently asked questions

Does double glazing keep heat out in an Adelaide summer?

It reduces heat transfer through the glass. For west-facing windows, low-e double glazing and external shading together do the most to cut afternoon heat gain.

How much does double glazing cost in Adelaide?

Full double-glazed window replacement typically runs $1,500–$8,500 per opening fitted, and retrofit double-glazed sashes $1,800–$4,000 per opening, depending on size and frame.

Does double glazing reduce noise?

Yes, double glazing generally reduces outside noise compared with single glazing. For busy roads, ask about laminated or acoustic glass in the unit.
